MSX blue Video World : Baruko

8 new videos on MSX blue Video World, my channel on YouTube ! It’s about Baruko, a game published by the Italian coder Gamecast Entertainment and submitted to the #msxdev Compo 2012. It’s the perfect sequel to the game map available since one week.

Game Map - Baruko (72)

You like or not the Gamecast Entertainment games, but if you want to remain impartial, you need to admit that Baruko is probably the best thing made by this Italian coder until now. An Arab has found the cavern of Ali Baba, but he must use well the keys to open doors and give up some treasures for not having to commit suicide. Besides, a mummy annoys him regularly in the upper part of the screen. Useful keys : cursors, spacebar (suicide), F1 (cheat).

There are many ways to play this game. I don’t have used the cheat option (free additional keys) or the icons leading to previous stage (you replay it, so it could be a way to get higher score and more treasures).

Actually, you start without any key, so I’ve decided to follow these rules : get all keys, avoid useless doors, manage to get one more key for each stage. At the end of stage 8, I have this way 8 keys and you can play again the game.

More keys means access to some “forgotten” treasures in the first passage, but don’t be a fool : your 8 keys will be lost if you explore two first stages without any limit. Probably, 16 or 24 keys are required to get almost all treasures (some of them are protected by icons leading to previous stage). A very amazing game !

The organization of #msxdev Compo 2012 did not require from coders to provide a DSK or ROM file. In the case of Baruko, you will find such files, but you must avoid them (the DSK has a wrong title screen – BARUCO-, the ROM does not work).

Here’s how to get around the problem :
- download the .zip file of the game
- unzip it
- go to the ROOT GAME sub-directory
- create a blank DSK image with Disk Manager
- transfer on the DSK image the files of the ROOT GAME sub-directory
- use DSK2ROM with the parameters -fc 1 to create the ROM version (mapper : Konami SCC)
